Fred Pollard has spent a great deal of time accumulating educational degrees of various sorts. He says he has more degrees than a thermometer.
Born and raised in North Carolina, Fred recognized the value of community while growing up. He also loved drawing from a young age, even creating his own comic book for fun with the super hero character, "Charge"! After high school, Fred studied Commercial Art and earned an associate degree. Through this study, he learned he was somewhat color blind, so he changed the direction of his life towards community and fellowship. He received a BS in English Bible and Counseling. In 1995, he then acquired a MA in Counseling from West Virginia University. After years of providing family counseling, Fred decided to go out on his own into Real Estate. Oh, and by the way, he's been a local musician for 10+ years in the area, as he's played guitar and sung in many venues over the course of his life. And now, his dream of writing children's books has taken center stage.
Fred's life experiences and training all lead up to the rich character development found in his books. He finds he can tactfully weave values, life skills, and community involvement into his children's picture stories to further help those in a meaningful way. And Fred does all his writings and illustrations by himself..... No A.I.
All of Fred's books leave you with a relevant message because that is just him being Papa Fred. You know, like a dad.....only cooler.
Bart Bantam is real, but not in the sense you can reach out and touch him. When my sons were young, I would wake them up in the morning with a mama hen's voice, and replace some words to sound like a hen talking. For example, I would say, "Bake Up!" instead of "Wake Up!" It was cute, and annoying, according to my boys,😊 but this chicken idea stuck with me. I doodled with some preliminary sketches and had a very basic outline of a story. And then I put this project away to continue on with my life. Over 10 years passed, and through a conversation with a friend, I remembered the old illustrations and narrative I wrote way back when. I decided NOW is the time to pursue this dream. Looking at these bare bones of an idea, the character of Bart Bantam came to life! I felt a small bantam rooster was a perfect character to use to convey a message of kindness and fellowship. Bart knows how to be a loving son, a loyal friend, and a help to the community. He can be a bit shy and awkward, but manages to pull off the seemingly impossible. Things aren't always rosy and picture perfect, but Bart handles himself well in tough situations. Finding the perfect character to speak through has been an exhilarating experience. I only hope that I do Bart proud and adequately show off his endearing personality. After all, Bart has a lot to say. You can bet on it. Papa Fred
